Vantacut vs Premiere Pro for the first cut.

Premiere Pro is where many films are finished. Vantacut is where the first cut of an event highlight can exist before you start trimming.

The job

Both are timeline editors. The question is who makes the first highlight reel from hours of event footage: you, or Auto-Edit.

Two kinds of first cut

Premiere Pro’s Text-Based Editing starts from words: it builds a rough cut from what people said, which suits interviews, panels and talking-head work. An event highlight starts from picture and a song. Auto-Edit watches the footage for the best moments, hears speech in 22 Indian languages and English, asks up to three questions only you can answer (who matters, the tone, what to leave out), shows the plan, then cuts to the song’s beat. The song’s length is the reel’s length. If your film is mostly speech, the transcript is the better starting point; if it is a wedding or a gala set to music, the footage is.

Using both on one job

Many editors keep the tool they finish in and change only how the first cut gets made. Run Auto-Edit in Vantacut, walk the reel, swap what it missed and trim it until the structure is right. Then export the movie as MP4, MOV or WebM and bring it into Premiere Pro for the finishing you already do there. It arrives as one rendered movie, not as separate clips: Vantacut does not write a Premiere project, so re-cut in Vantacut, where the reel is still ordinary clips on ordinary tracks, before you export.

Where it runs, and when it needs the internet

Premiere Pro is Adobe’s app, inside a Creative Cloud membership. Vantacut is a native desktop app for Windows 10 or later and for Linux (Ubuntu 24.04 or later, amd64); macOS is coming. Editing, playback and export run on your computer and keep working offline once you have signed in, so a laptop at a venue with no signal can still cut and export. Only Auto-Edit needs a connection, to analyse low-quality copies of your clips, still frames and the speech, after the app asks once.

Your footage stays on your computer

Editing, playback and export run on your computer, and your original footage and songs never leave it. To find moments, Auto-Edit shares low-quality copies of your clips, still frames and the speech, and the app asks once before anything is sent. The editor works worldwide, in English; credit packs are priced in Indian rupees.
